The Flagstaff
Jim Thorpe’s Crown Jewel is coming back
The 10,000 sq ft ballroom was the “Pennsylvania Building” at the 1901 Worlds Fair Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, NY. It was purchased at the demolition auction in 1902, disassembled for transport, and brought to Lehighton, PA by train.
The current ballroom was put up in 1913 and has been enjoyed ever since as a ballroom, event location for live music, weddings, and even at one point a roller rink. With its stunning views of Jim Thorpe’s Historic District, Flagstaff truly is the Crown Jewel of Carbon County.
History
During the Civil War, history recounts a young patriotic man climbing a lightning-struck tree to hoist a flag of the United States. From this time forward the property became known as “Flagstaff.”
